Set in the remote wilderness of Kaokoland in north-western Namibia, Hoanib Elephant Camp offers a rare opportunity to experience one of Africa’s most extraordinary desert ecosystems. Situated on the northern bank of the ephemeral Hoanib River within the Sesfontein Community Conservancy, the camp is surrounded by rugged mountains, ancient riverbeds and vast desert landscapes where wildlife has evolved to thrive in some of the harshest conditions on earth.
The real draw of Hoanib Elephant Camp is its extraordinary wildlife. Guided game drives offer opportunities to encounter desert-adapted elephants, giraffe, black rhino, lion, oryx, springbok, zebra and kudu, while nature walks and specialist tracking experiences reveal how wildlife survives in this arid landscape. Guests can also meet local Himba communities and gain insight into the people whose lives are intrinsically connected to this remote wilderness.
About Kaokoland
One of Namibia's most remote and spectacular regions, Kaokoland lies in the country's north-west and is characterised by dramatic mountains, dry river valleys, desert plains and vast open spaces. The Hoanib River is an ephemeral watercourse, flowing only after significant rainfall, yet its dry riverbeds provide an important lifeline for the region's remarkable desert-adapted wildlife.
The area is particularly renowned for its desert-adapted elephants and giraffes, while free-ranging black rhino and the elusive desert lion add to the region's extraordinary wildlife appeal. Kaokoland also provides an opportunity to learn about the semi-nomadic Himba people and their enduring relationship with this harsh but beautiful environment.
