Plan the best time to visit Zanzibar, from sunny beach months and calm seas to quieter green-season stays.
Zanzibar’s best travel months are June–October and January–February, when days are warm, dry, and ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and relaxed beach time. The long rains from March–May and short rains in November bring tropical showers and green landscapes, while December offers calm seas and a lively festive feel.
January–February brings hot, sunny beach days with light, occasional showers. Sea conditions are typically calm and clear – ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and sunset sails.
On the southeast coast, the Kaskazi winds make it prime time for kitesurfing around Paje/Jambiani. It’s a popular window, so beach lodges book up early.
The long rains arrive, with heavier, more frequent showers and higher humidity – some smaller lodges may close briefly, especially in April.
If you don’t mind tropical downpours, you’ll find softer rates, lush landscapes, and peaceful beaches. Reef trips still run when seas are safe; pack a lightweight rain jacket.
Dry, breezy, and comfortably warm – Zanzibar’s classic peak season. The Kusi trade winds bring excellent kiting (Jun–Aug) and cooler evenings.
Visibility is good for reef excursions around Mnemba, and it’s a superb time for Stone Town touring without the heat haze. July–August are busiest; plan ahead.
October is warm and mostly dry – a lovely shoulder month with calm seas. The short rains often fall in November as brief, tropical bursts followed by sunshine, keeping gardens green and beaches quiet.
By late December, festivities pick up, the Kaskazi winds return for kiting, and sea temps are gloriously balmy – a favourite time for holidaymakers seeking a barefoot Christmas on the beach.
