During January and February, regions such as Kigali, Lake Kivu, Volcanoes National Park, and Nyungwe National Park have warm days and cool evenings at higher elevations, while lower-lying areas like Akagera National Park experience hot days and mild evenings.

This time is favored for Rwanda Safaris, providing an excellent chance to discover the country’s beautiful scenery. The pleasant weather and clear skies in these months make it ideal for memorable forest hikes. Nonetheless, it’s essential to be aware that prices are usually elevated during this dry season, necessitating careful planning in advance.

March to May

March signals the start of the rainy season, lasting until mid-May, with continuous showers. Despite the precipitation, this period remains suitable for primate trekking in the enchanting landscape. However, it’s crucial to have top-notch rain gear for navigating the dense, wet forests.

April brings forth similar wet conditions as May. Travelers eyeing destinations in Rwanda should be aware that hiking in the Virunga Mountains can pose challenges during this time.

By mid-May, the rainfall begins to taper off, offering an opportunity to avoid crowds of tourists. Additionally, there’s a greater chance of securing a last-minute gorilla trekking permit. May is especially rewarding for birdwatchers, as it coincides with the breeding season, adorning the skies with colorful winged species.

June to September

June through September marks the peak of Rwanda’s dry season, widely considered the optimal time to visit. During this period, there’s typically light cloud cover, creating a comfortable climate for gorilla trekking. June features the annual Kwita Izina Ceremony, where newborn gorillas are named. In September, the Rwanda Film Festival takes center stage, highlighting local filmmakers alongside international favorites.

October to December

If you’re considering a trip to Rwanda from October to December, expect the short rainy season. While brief showers are frequent during these months, they often give way to clear blue skies. This period may offer cost-saving opportunities on gorilla trekking permits, accommodations, and lodges, provided you don’t mind a bit of mud and rain.
