January marks one of the hottest and rainiest periods in Mauritius, with a high influx of tourists from the Christmas season, leading to a bustling atmosphere. Expect heavy rain showers in the late afternoons, sometimes accompanied by torrential storms.

February continues the trend of hot, humid, and rainy weather in Mauritius, although rainfall typically doesn’t persist for long and clears up after a few hours. While not ideal for beach vacations due to the weather, February sees fewer crowds. Cyclones are still a possibility during this month.

In March, Mauritius celebrates the Holi Festival, also known as the ‘Festival of Colours’, in honour of the Hindu deity Lord Krishna. This vibrant celebration involves attendees covering themselves in brightly coloured powder as they line the streets, creating a festive atmosphere. While still humid, March experiences less rainfall compared to January and February.

April to July

April in Mauritius brings hot and humid weather, perfect for sun seekers, although it can be busier over the Easter holidays. May marks the start of winter, with comfortable temperatures and lifted humidity, along with reasonable travel specials. June sees cooler weather and increased trade winds, ideal for kite-surfing enthusiasts. July remains cool, particularly in the North, which is popular due to school holidays in the Northern hemisphere.

August to October

August in Mauritius brings milder temperatures and dry weather, perfect for sunny days without intense heat. It’s advisable to stay on the west or north coast during this time for more sheltered beaches. The island celebrates the Ganesh Chaturthi Festival in August, honouring the Elephant God Ganesh.

September marks the unofficial start of peak season, with decreasing trade winds and rising temperatures, offering quieter beaches, good flight prices, and discounts on accommodations. October is the driest month, bustling with activity as the Hindu festival of Diwali illuminates the island with candles and lamps.

November & December

November brings rising temperatures and humidity in Mauritius, along with increased hours of sunshine and a rise in rainfall. It’s an ideal time for scuba diving, especially for observing seasonal turtles like the Hawksbill and Green turtles.

December is a bustling month globally, and Mauritius is no exception. The humidity continues to increase, with heavy showers typically occurring later in the day. Sea temperatures rise significantly, perfect for water sports like scuba diving, windsurfing, and kayaking. Planning well in advance is recommended for a beach holiday in December.
