Great Migration FAQ's

When is the best time to see the Great Migration?

It depends on what you’d like to experience:

  • December to March: Calving season in the southern Serengeti (best for predator action).
  • June to July: Grumeti River crossings in Tanzania.
  • July to October: Mara River crossings in Kenya’s Masai Mara (most dramatic).
  • November: Herds moving south, fewer crowds, excellent value.

Tanzania (Serengeti): Best for calving and early migration stages.

Kenya (Masai Mara): Best for dramatic Mara River crossings and wide-open plains. Many of our guests combine both for the full picture.

For peak months (July–October), we recommend booking 12–18 months ahead to secure the best camps and lodges.

It really depends on when and how you choose to travel. During the shoulder season, expect to pay from around USD 600 per person per night, while peak migration months (June – October) range between USD 800 and USD 1 200 pppn, excluding flights and park fees.

Conservation fees typically add USD 110 – 200 per person per night, and accommodation can vary widely… from classic luxury camps to ultra-exclusive lodges costing up to USD 3 500 pppn.

At Africa Tailormade, we design flexible, tailor-made itineraries to suit your family’s style and budget whether you’re looking for comfort, adventure, or a once-in-a-lifetime splurge.

Yes – many lodges in Tanzania and Kenya are family-friendly, with private vehicles, shorter drives, and fun bush activities. Documentation rules apply: U.S. families must carry unabridged birth certificates for children under 18 when traveling to Kenya.

During the Great Migration you can expect zebra, gazelle, topi, eland, giraffe, elephants, and the predators that follow the herds: lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, wild dogs, and crocodiles.

River crossings are never guaranteed since they depend on rainfall, water levels, and timing but if you travel between July and October, you’ll have the best chance.

Absolutely. Many guests add the following destinations:

  • Zanzibar (beach & culture)
  • Rwanda or Uganda (gorilla trekking)
  • Cape Town & Winelands (city & culinary escape)
  • Victoria Falls (iconic natural wonder)
