January offers plenty of sunshine and warmth, making it perfect for a beach holiday. There is also great visibility for diving and snorkelling. Peak season falls over January and it is recommended that travellers book their holiday in advance. February in the Maldives offers consistently reliable weather, characterized by clear blue skies, occasional fluffy white clouds, and minimal rainfall. Abundant sunshine and warmth make it an ideal time for a beach vacation. In March, temperatures in the Maldives soar to around 31°C on average, ideal for extended beach outings. Occasional brief showers provide relief from the heat. March marks the beginning of the surfing season in the Maldives. With optimal weather conditions and nine hours of continuous sunlight, March is an excellent time to engage in outdoor activities and enjoy quality time with loved ones. The clear skies and gentle breeze create a perfect atmosphere for sunbathing.

April & May

In April, the Maldives continues to enjoy warm temperatures, plenty of sunshine, and clear water visibility. However, there’s a slightly increased chance of rain, especially towards the end of the month, signalling the end of the dry season and a slight rise in humidity. Expect more rainfall as April progresses. Despite fewer tourists, it’s a great time to visit for pleasant weather, excellent diving and surfing conditions, and favourable sailing conditions.

June, July & August

During June, the Maldives enters its southwest monsoon season, marked by choppy seas and hot, humid weather. While rainfall and cloudy skies are frequent, sunny days and warm temperatures persist. Surfing continues in Central Male atolls, and accommodation rates remain affordable. This month also heralds the beginning of manta ray spotting season in the Northern Atolls.

Despite the weather challenges, June offers great opportunities for activities like whale shark and dolphin trips, deep-sea fishing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. However, surface swells can reach 1-2 meters, especially during the main rainy season from June to July. The southwest monsoon brings easterly currents through the channels, drawing mantas and whale sharks to Hanifaru Bay to feed on plankton.

Despite rougher seas and cloudy skies, sunny days are still common. August is ideal for experienced sailors to charter monohulls for a challenging wind experience. Alternatively, families, groups, and couples seeking relaxation may prefer catamarans, known for their stability, space, and comfort in windy conditions.

September & October

In September, the Maldives experiences the peak of the wet season, driven by the southwestern monsoon, which brings frequent monsoon showers, high humidity, and slightly cooler daytime temperatures. This period, marking the height of the rainy season and peak low season, attracts surfers and travellers more interested in cultural immersion than sunbathing.

By October, the low season and wet monsoon come to a close, although unpredictable weather and occasional severe storms may persist. Despite this, surfing conditions remain excellent nationwide, with accommodation prices staying low. Additionally, October marks the end of the Maldives’ surfing season, characterized by outstanding surfing opportunities in the Central and Northern atolls during the South-West monsoons, which occur from May to October.

November & December

November in the Maldives marks the transition from the wet season to the shoulder season, during which prices typically begin to rise. However, the weather remains unpredictable, with the possibility of prolonged rainfall despite the hot and humid conditions. On the upside, water visibility improves as plankton clears, offering excellent opportunities for scuba diving and snorkelling.

December presents an attractive option for those seeking winter sunshine, providing warm temperatures and ample sunlight in the Maldives. While there’s an increased risk of rain and storms, especially in the first half of the month, the weather tends to improve as December advances, offering dry and pleasant days. This month showcases idyllic imagery of unspoiled beaches, clear turquoise lagoons, and coral-fringed atolls bustling with diverse marine creatures, offering an ideal setting for exciting adventures, leisurely exploration, and indulgent experiences.
