In Botswana, the arrival of January and February brings delightful, rejuvenating rain showers. Picture scorching, muggy days punctuated by breathtaking thunderstorms and extended downpours, resulting in a richly varied Safari adventure.
While the Kalahari Desert thrives thanks to this vital precipitation, bustling with life across its once parched expanse, the Okavango Delta dwindles to a mere third of its usual size. As March unfolds, the waning summer brings cooler temperatures and a gradual reduction in rainfall, initiating a transformation in Botswana’s landscape, ultimately forming a haven for wildlife.
Green Season: April & May
April provides a balanced compromise between the contrasting seasons, featuring cooler mornings and evenings coupled with pleasantly warm days and minimal rainfall. Alongside the ameliorating climate, excellent wildlife viewing opportunities arise, extending from this point through October.
High Season: June to October
Many might argue that this is unequivocally the prime time to explore the magnificent terrain of Botswana! The opportunities for game viewing, activities, and adventures are boundless. As winter advances in Botswana, expansive clear blue skies dominate the landscape. In the Okavango Delta, water levels peak, extending southward to Maun. Wildlife observation along the water channels reaches its peak and will continue until the initial rains arrive in November.
Shoulder season: November & December
November marks the ‘spring shoulder season’ in Botswana, characterized by towering thunderclouds, the return of migrant birds, and the emergence of newborn calves in verdant fields, while predators await nearby.
This month also brings a degree of unpredictability, as the extent of rainfall can vary significantly. Regardless, the weather remains exceedingly hot. Game viewing remains favorable, as animals congregate around watering holes and lush vegetation.
Thunderstorms make a comeback in Botswana, bringing bursts of rainfall that rejuvenate the landscapes, aiding vegetation recovery and the revival of grazing lands. Playful new-born calves dot the fertile Kalahari plains, frequently attracting the attention of lurking predators. With the gradual filling of pans, an increasing number of animals migrate to the central parks, where both the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and Nxai Pans National Parks teem with abundant wildlife during this season. The Savuti region also thrives with exceptional game viewing opportunities.
